Vancouver is Canada's biggest cruise port and effectively the Canadian starting line for every Alaska sailing. Between late April and early October, Canada Place sees four to six ship turnarounds per week — Princess, Celebrity, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian all base hulls here through the summer, with occasional appearances from Cunard, Disney and the small-ship expedition fleet.
Why Vancouver beats a US departure
The math works out this way for most Canadian cruisers: Vancouver eliminates a return flight, a pre-cruise hotel night and the CAD→USD exchange on US-side travel costs. Even if a comparable Seattle-departing Alaska itinerary quotes a lower nightly fare, the total trip cost usually tips in favour of Vancouver for anyone in BC, Alberta or Saskatchewan — and sometimes further east.
The practical bonus: you board the ship in your own currency, with Canadian customs on the ship's side (not US pre-clearance), and you disembark back on Canadian soil at the end of the week.
Getting to Canada Place
Canada Place is in downtown Vancouver, directly accessible from the Trans-Canada Highway, with the SkyTrain Waterfront Station 90 seconds away. Long-term parking is handled by multiple operators within three blocks; the cheapest options run on the port's booking site and typically start around CAD $30/night. Pre-booking a stall is highly recommended between June and August.
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is 30-45 minutes away by taxi or SkyTrain's Canada Line (one transfer at Waterfront). If you're flying in, book a hotel downtown the night before — don't try to make a same-day connection to a turnaround.
What sails from here
Peak summer typically brings:
- Princess (Majestic, Royal, Discovery, Crown) — the deepest Alaska presence from Vancouver.
- Holland America (Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Zuiderdam) — same-era ships, slightly older demographic.
- Celebrity (Edge-class or Solstice-class) — premium end of mainstream.
- Royal Caribbean (Quantum-class or Radiance-class) — biggest ships, most family amenities.
- Norwegian (Bliss, Encore) — freestyle format.
Repositioning sailings (one-ways to San Francisco, LA or San Diego) happen in April and October — these are the cheapest Alaska-adjacent cruises in the catalog.
