The Mediterranean is the most port-dense cruise region in the world — on a 10-night sailing you'll usually visit 7-9 ports, with sea days as the exception rather than the rule. For Canadian travellers used to Caribbean 7-nighters that visit 3-4 ports, the pace is different: more unpacking-free travel, less time on the ship, more aggressive shore excursion planning.
Three Mediterraneans
The industry splits the region into Western, Eastern and Greek Isles itineraries.
Western Mediterranean (Barcelona, Marseille, Monte Carlo, Rome, Florence/Pisa) is the busiest and most-sold. Fly into Barcelona or Rome and sail round-trip.
Eastern Mediterranean (Venice, Dubrovnik, Athens, Istanbul when available) sails less-crowded ports with more preserved old towns. Fly into Venice or Athens.
Greek Isles (Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Crete) is the beach-and-island take. Usually a shorter 4-7 night itinerary paired with a pre- or post-cruise mainland stay.
Who sails Mediterranean
Every major line fields ships here May through October. MSC has the deepest European presence as the market leader; NCL, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and Holland America all run full seasons. The luxury end — Silversea, Seabourn, Oceania — is strongest in the Mediterranean specifically because the small ships can get into harbours the big ones can't (Portofino, Capri, the smaller Greek Isles).
When to book
Peak Mediterranean season (June-August) has peak crowds and peak prices. May and late September are the shoulder months — same weather, 30-40% price break, half the tourists. If you can shift dates, that's the single biggest value lever.
For Canadian travellers, flight pricing matters as much as cruise pricing — direct Toronto/Montreal to Rome, Barcelona or Athens runs 1,200-2,000 CAD return in peak, 700-1,100 shoulder. Book both halves of the trip together.
What to budget beyond the fare
Shore excursions in the Mediterranean are the biggest add-on cost — figure 100-250 CAD per person per port if booked through the ship, 40-120 CAD if booked independently. Independent tours are generally better value but you're responsible for making it back to the ship on time.
