The Complete Guide to Canadian Cruise Departure Ports

Flying south to catch a ship is still the default for most Canadian cruisers, but the number of itineraries sailing from a Canadian homeport has grown enough that it's worth asking: should you drive instead? Here's the short answer, port by port.

Vancouver (Canada Place)

Vancouver is Canada's biggest cruise port, and the overwhelming majority of Alaska Inside Passage cruises depart here between April and October. Four to six ships typically turn around at Canada Place each week during peak season, with Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean all basing hulls here. If you live in BC or Alberta, this is almost always the right port to pick — the drive beats the airfare.

Victoria (Ogden Point)

Victoria is more of a port of call than a true homeport, but repositioning cruises occasionally start or end here. Watch for one-way sailings from Vancouver to San Francisco or Los Angeles that stop in Victoria on the way — a shorter cruise at a lower per-night fare.

Montreal (Grand Quai)

Montreal is the primary St. Lawrence River cruise homeport. Boutique and expedition lines like Ponant and Seabourn run small-ship Canada/New England itineraries from here in autumn — peak leaf-season sailings sell out a year ahead.

Quebec City (Pointe-à-Carcy)

Quebec City is a secondary St. Lawrence homeport. It's a popular turnaround port for lines that pair Quebec with Boston or New York. If you can be flexible by a week, a Quebec City-start sailing often beats the Montreal fare by 15-30%.

Halifax Seaport

Halifax is almost entirely a port of call rather than a homeport — but it's worth watching for the handful of eastbound transatlantic repositioning cruises that leave from here each spring (Cunard, especially). These are long, slow, oceanic cruises that sell for a fraction of their nightly fare.

Which port fits your plan

Start with your city and work outward:

  • BC and Alberta → Vancouver, almost always.
  • Ontario and Quebec → Montreal for St. Lawrence; Quebec City for better fares; drive or short flight.
  • Atlantic Canada → Halifax for transatlantics; otherwise fly to Vancouver or Fort Lauderdale.
  • Everyone else → Compare the drive-plus-port-stay cost against a straight flight to a US homeport like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Seattle or New York.
