Alaska vs Caribbean: Which Cruise Is Right for Canadians?
The two most-booked cruise regions for Canadians are Alaska (because it departs Vancouver) and the Caribbean (because it's warm all year). They offer different experiences at different price points. Here's a clean comparison.
Season
Alaska runs April through October — peak in June and July. The Caribbean sails year-round, with the best weather December through April. If you want warmth and sunshine in a Canadian winter, Caribbean wins by default.
Departure
Alaska cruises leave Vancouver, Seattle or Whittier/Seward. For most of Canada west of Ontario, Vancouver is a drive — zero airfare, zero currency conversion. Caribbean cruises leave Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, New Orleans, San Juan or New York. You'll pay for the flight and a pre-cruise hotel night.
Fare
Comparable 7-night sailings are typically within $200 CAD of each other on nightly rate, but total trip cost favours Alaska for most Canadians because of the airfare delta.
What you'll see
Alaska is wilderness — glaciers, wildlife, remote port towns like Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. The Caribbean is beaches, snorkelling and swimming with stingrays. Alaska is a scenic cruise; the Caribbean is a beach cruise.
Ships
Both regions attract the same cruise lines, but Alaska has more premium ships (Princess, Holland America, Celebrity) relative to mass-market, because the season is shorter and the clientele skews older. The Caribbean has everything, including the newest and biggest ships (Royal Caribbean's Oasis class, MSC's World class).
Our take
Pick Alaska if you want scenery, don't want to fly, and can go in summer. Pick the Caribbean if you want warmth, don't mind flying, and can go in winter.
